Seat Coverings

Leathers are becoming more and more problematic, hence the additional cost. The level of flaws which limit us to only utilize only a portion a hide are increasing. Being a natural material leather has flaws.    At the bottom we have some totally synthetic coverings of excellent quality (what I use in my own house) and they are denoted by "syn" after the name.

A common desire for genuine leather is because it is a natural material. I believe you should make your choice based on other factors. The huge amount of waste in using leather and the tanning process does not result in a green material. Virgin leather is best chosen for its tactile qualities and natural variation (complete with flaws). Our virgin leathers are supplied by Casper Hill leather of North Carolina.

Recycled and Syn leathers do not have an additional charge because of their 100% usability. Recycled and synthetic Leathers have two potential downsides: gloss and texture, both of which are controlled in the manufacturing process. I have curated these offerings to only include varieties that meet my standards for reflectivity, texture and feel.

Nomenclature is confusing to us all, especially at the finished product stage. Recycled leathers may legally be called "Leather",  just as plywood may legally be called "Wood Solids", and in the fray of marketing is often referred to Solid Wood. Recycled Leathers are a bonded or blended Leather. They are not Leatherette, Corfam, Naugahyde, or Prestoff, derogatory terms which were rightfully earned over the past four decades.  Recycled Leather is now quite common an up to 50% of Recycled Leather may be used in furniture or seating and still legitimately  be called "Leather".

The numbers are what denote the different fabric. The names are only a mnemonic feature and provide no information for us or our supplier (Charlotte).

Whats with the leather name "Modern"?

Genuine leathers (except Black) require a 10 seat order because of the size of the hides. Due to the cost and frequency of use I cannot inventory leathers except Black.

The term "Modern" is a supple 1.2 mm leather, soft and small standing pebble texture opposed to stiff "rustic" or "saddle" leathers.
